5 Life-Changing Habits To Transform Your Mental Health

By A.N. McMahon, LMHC

As the saying goes, “If you keep a habit, sooner or later it can feel like a part of you.”

For parents — especially those supporting their children through distinct challenges — self-care is vital to maintaining the health of the family. Fortunately, you can transform your mental health with 5 surprisingly simple habits.

  1. Mind your posture: Straighten your back, stretch tight muscles, and adopt an upright posture. Good posture positively affects mental health, reducing fatigue and maintaining self-esteem.
  1. Practice positive thinking: Dwelling on negative thoughts taints the way we perceive our lives. Counter negative thoughts with positive ones. Don’t disregard the thoughts — resolve and move through them to a more positive place.
  1. Get some sleep: Adequate sleep helps you rest and recharge to face whatever tomorrow holds. Lack of sleep not only causes grumpiness but also leads to higher levels of stress, frustration, depression and anxiety.
  1. Exercise: Physical activity releases feel-good chemicals (endorphins) that relieve stress, boost self-esteem, and aid concentration. Choose something realistic that you enjoy. Even a simple walk can work wonders.
  1. Hug someone: Per Winnie the Pooh, “A hug is always the right size.” Hugs release oxytocin, which makes us feel calm, safe, and relaxed, increasing self esteem and optimism in the process. Even hugging a furry friend counts.

Start small, but be consistent. Your mental health matters not only to you, but to your family.

Keep up the great work — we’re in your corner. We wish you and your loved ones health, help, and hope.
